DÜLMEN, Germany –
German State Military Command North Rhine-Westphalia’s top leader conducted a site visit to the Dülmen Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 worksite at Tower Barracks Oct. 26 to gain a better understanding of APS-2 operations there, including the storage and maintenance of thousands of combat vehicles and equipment pieces as well as life-saving medical equipment and supplies in support of theater readiness.
Dülmen APS-2 Site Director Troy Furlow – along with representatives from U.S. Army Garrison Benelux, U.S. Army Medical Materiel Agency and the contractor supporting APS-2 operations at Dülmen – provided a walking tour and briefing to German army Brig. Gen. Dieter Meyerhoff, U.S. Consulate General Düsseldorf Political and Economic Consul Chapman Godbey, Dülmen Liaison Officer Maj. Gen. (retired) Robert Bergmann, and others.
“Our focus included APS-2 issue operations, differences between the U.S. Army’s posture during the Cold War to now, and U.S. Army Medical Material Agency operations and capabilities, as well as APS-2 maintenance and APS-2 power projection capabilities,” said Furlow, who is assigned to Army Field Support Battalion-Germany, 405th Army Field Support Brigade.
“We toured the track maintenance warehouse, the central receiving and shipping point, the AN/TWQ-1 Avenger unit set, and the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Agency warehouse,” Furlow said.
The coordination for the tour was handled by U.S. Army Europe and Africa Liaison Officer Steven Steinberger who is responsible for the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia. He worked with the German State Military Command there and personnel from the 405th AFSB to include Furlow and his team at Dülmen to make the visit possible.
“Visits from our German counterparts are really important,” said Furlow. “They help to spotlight the strength of our NATO partnership.”
“And it gives them an idea of our capabilities and what we have on hand in case we’re called upon to further support theater operations with our APS-2 capabilities,” Furlow said.
The Dülmen APS-2 worksite is comprised of about 140,000 square feet of hardstand space and approximately 480,000 square feet of humidity controlled warehouse space with an additional 140,000 square feet of storage in the maintenance and storage swing space areas. This includes the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Agency warehouse, which is approximately 80,000 square feet.
In addition to the Dülmen APS-2 worksite, there are four other APS-2 sites in four countries across Europe under the command and control of the 405th AFSB. These APS-2 sites help to reduce deployment timelines, improve deterrence capabilities and provide additional combat power for contingency operations.

The 405th AFSB is assigned to U.S. Army Sustainment Command and under the operational control of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, U.S. Army Europe and Africa. The brigade is headquartered in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and provides materiel enterprise support to U.S. Forces throughout Europe and Africa – providing theater sustainment logistics; synchronizing acquisition, logistics and technology; and leveraging U.S. Army Materiel Command’s materiel enterprise to support joint forces.
