Africa is charged with providing and coordinating receipt, transfer, storage, and maintenance of APS to enable commanders to conduct unified action and the full range of military operations in support of U.S. Army Africa and Joint Forces.

Part of the 405th AFSB’s Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 program, this particular set of equipment was transported from Army Field Support Battalion-Benelux’s APS-2 worksite in Eygelshoven, Netherlands, to Slovakia for DEFENDER-Europe 22.

AFSBn-Africa DEFENDER-Europe APS-2 support - Army Field Support Battalion-Africa was responsible for command and control of an Equipment Configuration and Hand-off Area in Lešt’, Slovakia, during DEFENDER-Europe 22. The equipment is part of the 405th AFSB’s Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 program.

We are the premier European APS storage site and maintenance depot, ensuring Army readiness and support when and where needed.

Leadership

		Lieutenant Colonel Ross Hertlein, Commander, Army Field Support Battalion-Africa Lieutenant Colonel Ross Hertlein assumed command of Army Field Support Battalion-Africa on June 21, 2024, in Livorno, Italy at Leghorn Army Depot. LTC commissioned 31 December 2005 and attended Transportation Officer Basic course at Fort Eustis, Virginia in 2006. Full Biography
		Master Sergeant John Larche, Senior Enlisted Advisor, Army Field Support Brigade-Africa Master Sergeant John D. Larche is a native of Sumter, South Carolina; he joined the United States Army in August 2002. MSG Larche attended Basic Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, Advance Individual Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, as a Light Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic (63B). Full Biography

About us

Army Field Support Battalion-Africa is one of the four battalions of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade and is headquartered at Leghorn Army Depot in Livorno, Italy, a strategic power projection platform.

AFSBn-Africa provides and coordinates the receipt, transfer, storage, and maintenance of Army Prepositioned Stocks and Operational Project Stocks in the European theater to enable commanders with immediate access to combat-ready equipment in support of U.S. Army Europe and Africa requirements. The APS stored in Europe are designated APS-2.

The site provides nearly 750,000 square feet of controlled humidity warehouse space and 1.5M square feet of outside storage for materiel for several combatant commands. The stock sites are aligned with U.S. deterrence posture and increase the readiness and responsiveness of U.S. forces in Europe, support the collective defense and security of NATO allies, and bolster the security and capacity of U.S. allies and partners.

The battalion provides and coordinates U.S. Army Material Command enablers in support of U.S. Army Southern European Task Force- Africa/SETAF through its assigned Logistic Support Team - Africa, located at Camp Ederle in Vicenza, Italy.
