When he was a little boy, his mother worked for the U.S. Air Force on Ramstein Air Base, and most of the neighbor kids and his friends were Americans. At the age of 15, he was planning to enter an apprenticeship program with the German Federal Railway, but one of his American neighbors – an Army officer – asked if he might consider taking an apprenticeship opportunity with the U.S. Army.
